The Story of Little Slice Little Slice started off as Little Slice of Hell. I built Little Slice of Hell and then eventually put a sawzall to it (see Story of Little Slice of Hell). I shelved the parts and fooled around with other robot ideas (see story of Nasty). Right around March of 1999 Trey Roski mentioned that he was drumming up interest in his new creation, BattleBots. He wanted to know if he could borrow any of my robots to take around to show people. "Sure!" I quickly put together a new version of Little Slice of Hell which I simply called "Little Slice". Little Slice had half the drive power of LSoH, but it was also half the weight (150lbs). Little Slice sported six legs instead of eight and the un-powered weapons were purely cosmetic. Trey kept the robot for a couple months and told me people really liked the look of it. Success! Eventually Little Slice was returned and I took it to the Long Beach BattleBots competition. My first fight with LS was against Junior. I never had a chance to finish Little Slice (see story of The BattleBot Traps) and never expected to win. I'm kicking myself a little because if the saw blades were actually working I think I could have done some damage. Oh, well. Against Junior all I did was walk back and forth over him. I was hoping my weight would bust his drive train. Occasionally he was able to get his hook under me and eventually he did flip me. No biggy because it was a double elimination. My next fight was against stuffy. Picture a big plastic jeep full of stuffed animals. Oh boy! I didn't need working weapons to take him on. Little Slice pretty much dominated the fight, pushing stuffy around with ease. At one point a stuffed bear fell out of Stuffy. It became my number one mission to destroy that stuffed bear. I figured the best way to destroy the bear was to push it into the BattleBots saw blade traps. I spent the remainder of the match ignoring Stuffy and trying to move the bear. It was pretty difficult because Little Slice was built to walk over most things. With 20 seconds left I pushed the bear into the saw blades but didn't break in time. I had crashed Little Slice into the blades! The collision pulled off a battery connection! I was immobile! I lost! To Stuffy! Nuts. But it was fun. |
