The Story of Little Slice of Hell Little Slice of Hell is essentially two PHM's put together to make one big walker. In early 1998 Marc Thorpe contacted me and asked if PHM could be available for a TV show because it was very interesting to look at. "Sure!", I said. But here was the catch; I would be going up against much heavier opponents. No problem, I would re-make it as a heavier 'bot. Right, no problem. It became a headache and a major expense turning a 100 lb. robot into a 300 lb. robot. One major thing I changed were the feet. I went from small racquet-ball feet to big polyurethane feet. I also doubled the drive motors and exchanged gas engines for electric motors to power the blades. Right about when I finished building the monster I heard the TV show was cancelled. I got burned. Well, it was OK because now I had a robot to take to the 1998 Robot Wars in August. Then R Wars was cancelled. I got burned again. OK, OK, OK. Everything was fine because Gary was going to have Robotica in August. The Robotica was cancelled due to forces beyond Gary's control... Man, did I get burned. Three times the charm and I just put a sawzall to Little Slice of Hell (after getting video tape of it in action). I shelved the parts and fooled around with other robot ideas (see story of Nasty). I eventually rebuilt it as "Little Slice". For the rest of this story see Little Slice. |
